This passage came up in my reading today in the 365 Day Bible
Revelation 21:6-8 (New International Version, ©2010)
6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Just as God finished the work of creation in Genesis 2, and Jesus finished the work of redemption (John 19:30) so the Trinity will finish the entire plan of salvation by inviting the redeemed into the new creation.
The cowardly mentioned here are those who fear persecution and so give in to it.
On the other hand we see that people who overcome - "stand firm until the end". They will receive all the blessings that God has promised.
