The letter to the Hebrews is very straightforward in the warnings it gives...
"We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away." (Hebrews 2:1)
Drifting is OK - quite relaxing really! Have you ever been out in a boat, drifting and fishing? Very pleasant.
The problem comes when we are so relaxed in our lives, that we drift away from Christ - drift away from Christian values etc.
Isn't that what our society has done? It is not the first time a society has done that. We only have to read our Old Testaments to see a people forgetting all about God and living for themselves.
Is the society any richer for it? It doesn't appear so!

Dealing With The Divisive Person.
I didn't go looking for this....it came to me in my reading through the New Testament.
I am up to Titus. Paul s writing to him to encourage and instruct him.
"But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless....
......warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned." (3:9-11)
Good advice.....straight from God.

When Things Do Not Go As Planned..
Sometimes things do not go as we plan.
Sometimes (as young people say - and I hope it is not rude) "Life Sucks"
The Bible has an answer for those times. I was reminded of it this morning.
Habakkuk 3:17-19
"Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Saviour."
"The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights"
TFTD: The important thing for us IS NOT TO GIVE UP there is always a brighter day coming.

Christian Leadership....
In Titus, Paul gives us examples of the characteristics that a Christian leader must possess, characteristics that the leader must NOT possess and the reason why we must be careful in the selection of leaders....
WHAT A LEADER MUST NOT BE LIKE...
"Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless - not overbearing, not quick tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.." (1:7)
WHAT A LEADER MUST BE LIKE....
"...Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it." (1:8,9)

A Description Of Ministry.
As Paul writes to Timothy (in 2 Timothy 4:2) he gives a description of what is involved in ministry...
"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction."
Paul then writes that the time that people will listen is limited - that there will be a time when people do not want to listen to sound doctrine, but rather will make up doctrine to suit their own desires.
Do we then stop preaching? No - we seek to become clearer - to give an opportunity for repentance.

Do You Know Anyone Like This?
My reading this morning was from 2 Timothy 3:1-5. The list contained in this passage could be from the pages of the newspapers....
".....People will love only themselves and money. They will be proud, stuck-up, rude, and disobedient to their parents. They will also be ungrateful, godless, heartless, and hateful. Their words will be cruel, and they will have no self-control or pity. These people will hate everything that is good. They will be sneaky, reckless and puffed up with pride. Instead of loving God, they will love pleasure. Even though they will make a show of being religious, their religion won't be real. Don't have anything to do with such people."
Do you know anyone like this? Notice that Paul says to give them a wide berth.

Jesus Came To.............
This morning I read a very clear account of why Jesus came, and what he achieved by his coming.
2 Timothy 1:10 (CEV)
"Now Jesus has come to show us the kindness of God.
Christ our Saviour defeated death
and brought us the good news.
It shines like a light and offers life that never ends."
I praise God that I can see that and understand it. I meet many who re blinded to these truths.

About Money.
Here are some Scriptures that I came across this morning from 1 Timothy 6....
"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." (v.9,10)
"But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness." (v.11)
"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (v.17)
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life." (vs.18,19)

Being Smeared With Lies.
We see in Psalm 119:69-72 that the Psalmist knew what it was like to be mistreated.
"Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies,
I keep your precepts with all my heart.
Their hearts are callous and unfeeling,
but I delight in your law.
It was good for me to be afflicted
so that I might learn your decrees.
The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold."
All who stand up for God and Godly values will be persecuted. It makes the witness of your life, and the light that comes from your life, an unspeaking criticism of their lives.
We need to realise that - darkness does not like light.

How Sad.
Gert was an older lady in one of my congregations years ago. She was active in the music.
One day, she just gave up on her faith completely.
Turned her back on it.
How sad that was......to persevere for so many years, and then just give up.
I have never been able to understand that.
We are told though, that it will happen.
"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons..." 1 Timothy 4:1

Prayer For Sri Lanka
Please pray for Sri Lanka's churches to be instruments of God's peace. The division between the Sinhalese and Tamil groups will take many years to heal, even though the civil war is over.

Making God Known.
Many churches have as their motto, or their vision statement about "Making God Known" or making Christ Known.
They are indeed heading in a good direction.
In my reading today from Ezekiel 28 & 29 there are six occasions that God exclaims....
"....Then they will know that I am the LORD."
This shows God's desire - that people know Him.

Colossians 4:2-5 gives us a great picture on how we are to live...
"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let you conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

Psalm 119:9 says this, "How can a young man keep his way pure?" Or a young woman for that matter!
We are told how...
* by living according to God's word.
* by seeking God with all our heart
* by asking God to help us not stray from His commands
* by hiding God's word in our hearts
That gives us something to go on with!

Epaphras - Who Is He?
Epaphras, who is he? An insignificant, not well known, obscure....
He turns up in Colossians 4 and verse 12 - we learn that he is one of the Christians at Colossae. He is a "doulos", a servant of Christ.
It is what he is doing that is interesting....
"He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you my stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured?
Not a bad sort of a bloke.

Paul The Apostle's Job Description.
Paul spells out his objectives as he ministers to the Colossians (1:28)
"We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."
His aim is, that by what he does, he will equip everyone to meet Christ.
How does he do that?
"To this end I labour, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me." (v.29)

Sin IS Serious.
God tells the prophet Jeremiah that the priests and prophets of his day are practising deceit.
What are they doing?
They are letting the people be deceived into thinking that sin is not serious - it may not be serious to them BUT it is certainly serious to God.
"They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. "Peace, peace" they say, when there is no peace." (Jeremiah 8:11)
Imagine a very bad accident. The ambulance comes and the paramedics dress a very serious wound with some band aid strips! That is what the priests and prophets are doing in Jeremiah's day.
Sin is serious and modern preachers need to be pointing men, women and children to repentance - turning lives back in God's direction.

".....whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy --think about such things. (4:8)
That is a sobering thought isn't it?
Our minds are often on anything but what Paul is encouraging us to think about.

"But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained." (3:13b-16)
