Ecclesiastes 7:1-4
A good name is better than fine perfume,
and the day of death better than the day of birth.
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death is the destiny of every man;
the living should take this to heart.
Sorrow is better than laughter,
because a sad face is good for the heart.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.
Solomon has just told us to "eat, drink and be merry", to find satisfaction in one's work, and to enjoy what God has given us. This last advice seems to contradict what he has previously said.
We are to enjoy what we have been given, but realise that adversity also strikes. Adversity reminds us that life is short, that we need to live wisely. It also refines our character.
In other words --- it is all a part of living.
Have a great day,
Peter Clark.
